2023 was a year of lots of learning for Jona and his manager (dad). 

Cycling is a complicated sport. Even within cycling, each cycling discipline has many complexities to it as well. It's not always easy to find straight answers on the internet either. We made a whole lot of mistakes, some costly, so hopefully this section will help you avoid one or two. 

Something to note, there are some unfiltered opinions here. When it comes to the local scene, we've tried to present the first impression of an outsider, as distinct from the deeper appreciation we have for the great individuals involved that we've gotten to know over time.

  • Track racing is a great way to ride fast. In Auckland we have one working velodrome at Manukau. The indoor Grassroots Trust Velodrome is 90 minutes to 2 hours drive away in Cambridge. There is racing at the Manukau Track on Tuesday nights in Summer, and some coaching available on Saturdays and sometimes Thursdays.   • Auckland MTB Club runs a few mountain biking events around Auckland each year. There's also a 5-event school's series in Auckland, North/South Island and National schools more»

  • Gravel riding is usually more informal.We're still uncovering these events in NZ. You can see any we've found in the calendar. Auckland Cycling Group on meetup does some.Dynamo Events has run a NZ Gravel Nationals previously. It's a thing they do in Europe during the winter. There are not many cyclocross events here in NZ but there is North and South Islands Schools cyclocross events. Maybe one day Jona will get a cyclocross bike and give it a go.
